Clive Nicholas

Clive Nicholas is engaged in specialist research and consultancy activties together with the development and delivery of training programmes for practising engineers, analysts and managers in industry and government.

Previously, he held the posts of Deputy Director of the Centre for Management of Industrial Reliability, Cost and Effectiveness and Lecturer in Systems Effectiveness in the School of Engineering at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom. He was a Rendell Scholar and holds a Bachelors Degree in Economics, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and a Masters Degree in Engineering.

He has developed, organised and taught on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and short courses at various universities. He has undertaken research, published in journals and presented technical papers at international conferences on cost engineering, system effectiveness analysis and human performance engineering.

His work in the field of human factors has included the development of processes and training in Human Error Analysis and Management Strategies in Aircraft Maintenance for Airbus maintainability and supportability engineers in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Spain working on commercial and military aircraft programmes. This work has included the creation of training materials, handbooks and other implementation documentation. He has undertaken data analysis of over 10,000 military aircraft safety occurrences to identify trends and lessons learned for dissemination on future platform development. He has been part of a team involved in a major programme to develop and deliver Human Factors in Maintenance training for aircraft designers. As well as developmental work he has piloted initial delivery and has developed an accompanying ‘training the trainers’ programme. Recently, he has been involved in a developmental project for Airline Operators Safety Management Systems that sought to develop a Maintenance Safety Management System and to integrate this into wider safety policies, structures, and procedures.

As well as his technical knowledge and specialisation, he has been actively involved in professional aspects of training and development for many years. Before joining the School of Engineering, he was responsible for the provision of programmes of Continuing Education and Training provided by the University of Exeter for commerce, industry and the professions. He has participated in the development of national vocational education and training policies and best practices. He has also published papers and contributed to a book in the field of adult education entitled Continuing Professional Development – Issues in Design and Delivery.

Prior to this, he was a specialist in investment analysis and forecasting. He has worked with the international Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UK National Economic Development Office (NEDO) and the National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR) as well as various banking and financial organisations. He was Leverhulme Research Fellow in the Department of Economics at the University of Exeter. He is joint author with Professor David Mayes of a book entitled The Economic Impact of Leasing and he has published several papers on capital finance and investment.
